ولد في منفلوط بمحافظة أسيوط لعائلة كريمة توارثت قضاء الشريعة ونقابة الصوفية قرابة مائتي عام ونهج سلك آبائه في الثقافة فالتحق بالكتاب في القرية فحفظ القرآن الكريم كله وهو دون الحادية عشرة من العمر ، وأرسله أبوه إلى الأزهر تحت رعاية رفاق له من أهل بلدته فدرس على يد الشيخ محمد عبده ، ولما توفي محمد عبده رجع المنفلوطي إلى بلده ومكث بها عامين متفرغا لدراسة الأدب القديم. وكتب تحت عنوان (نظرات ) مقالات تم جمعها في كتاب تحت نفس الاسم على ثلاثة أجزاء
ومن مؤلفاته أيضاً: العبرات - في سبيل التاج - الشاعر - مجدولين- مختارات المنفلوطى - الفضي
